Who Are We: An Unanswered Question

By Olusola O. Muhammad

For thousands of years man has pondered the eternal question of who we are, where do we come from, who created us and how did the universe come into existence. Many have used the Bible or the Holy Qur’an as evidence of our creation and scientists have provided us with their “theories” seeking to explain the “unseen” reality. Is not science the evidence of that which is not seen?. In this clash of ideas, religion and science have warred constantly none being able to thwart the other, but the question remains unanswered. Who are we?

Charles Darwin provided us with his theory of evolution from an examination of the science of human procreation and the evolutionary stages of that process. But was Darwin correct in his theory given that “theory” is inconclusive and remains open to investigation and analysis?

Religion has not won the day as the depth, science, knowledge and wisdom contained in the Bible and Holy Qur’an has not been fully explored and has been placed on the back-burner by 'religionists.'

It's negation despite the emphatic manifestations by the Creator of all that we see and the undeniable reality of the uniformity around us; plant and animal kingdom, nature, constant rate and speed of the planets and the unique and profound construct of the human being, yet to be fully understood by man manifests an unequalled 'Architect,' whose creation still baffles those immersed in science.

For surly if this were not the case, the mere fact that the Bible says “God created man in his own image and likeness”, gives credence to the writings of the Bible, yet its 'truths' are not carried out in the society in which we live.

In the plant kingdom we see all over the world various degrees of colour and type of plant. Most plants have similar characteristics, formed from a root from which sprouts a stem, branches and then leaves or fruits. The common factor of them all is that they all come from the earth with different functions and ability to sustain our lives.

As plants come through the earth, we as humans also come from the earth. A human can be defined as “pertaining to or characterising man, from humus. A dark organic material in soil produced by the decomposition of animal or vegetable matter essential to the fertility of the earth”.

We as human beings also come from the earth in different shades and colours manifesting different qualities and skills essential to the fertility or growth of nations and civilisations.

Some of us are good and some of us are bad, yet without us we would be unable to develop government, society and civilisation.

Given this reality how can we then hate one facet of the human family or try to suppress the ability and skills of another human being when that person has been brought onto the planet to take humanity forward?

We don’t condemn plants for the work they do with the exception of weeds that choke the life force and fruit of that which is useful to serve our daily consumption and medicinal needs.

Since humans are of one dimension, physically, in that we all have two eyes, one nose, two hands, two legs and feet; is it these physical attributes that make and constitute who we are or is there another force driving this physically body?

For those of us who are vehicle drivers, when we step into the vehicle, turn the key in the ignition and speed off on our way to work we always take for granted that the car will start.

We forget that under the shell of that car is an engine which requires several factors to enable the car to function such as the combustion of electricity, gas and petrol to do the work of propelling the car forward

For us as human beings our shell is our flesh which is made up of atoms of evey chemical found in the earth and the universe. It is sustained by the eating of vegetation and the flesh of animals.

However the flesh does not act of its own accord. Flesh cannot move by itself without a force being applied to it similar to the pedal of the car being pushed so that it moves.

Flesh is the physical manifestation of the 'thinking' of the Creator who created the heavens and the earth.

You and I can create, but to give it motion we must apply the third law of the universe which is “a body at rest remains at rest until acted upon by an external force.

We are however acted upon by an internal force which you cannot see with the naked eye, but you can see the force of the action by the way you smile, the pace of your walk, when you talk and when you move the limbs of your body.

So if we are not flesh then what are we. We are a body of flesh in which is encased a 'force' or divine essence/spirit, which in turn is governed by the “thoughts” of the mind.

The Brain
The Human Brain

Mind is not brain and brain is not mind. “Brain is a repository of electrical energy, brain is a transmitter and a receiver, brain is the root of mind and brain is the source of mind”.

Your mind is that which governs your ability to think, generate ideas and governs the thought of your actions. We do not see the words that we speak, nor do we see the air that we breath yet that reality is evident for we communicate and breath everyday without recognising them.

In our heads we hear or should be able to hear a “voice” talking to us. Philosophers have defined it as consciousness, which “guides, warns, reproves, exhorts, and accuses us of going contrary to what is right”.

This voice is our friend and console, ever present telling us what to do and what not to do and still we cannot see our consciousness.

We cannot see the force which rotates the planets in their orbits each travelling at the speed of 1037 1/3 miles per hour neither can we see the thought that moves the arm. The thought is manifested by its movement having being generated by the mind, each thought travelling at an average speed of “24 billion miles per second”.

Allah's Universe
Allah, The World's Greatest Architect. Who is there like unto HIM.

Combined, the “inner voice” or our consciousness and our thoughts dwell in the brain.

To remove the brain from its encasement; flesh, would leave us with a brain, a spinal cord and nerves; which are connected to the various parts of the body and are like telephone lines for the control and movement of the body.

In the bible god says “I created you male and female and breathed into you of my spirit”. The spirit is the unseen force, the intangible reality of the essence of God.

In the Holy Qur’an, the book of the Muslims Allah (God) says “Such is the Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Mighty, the Merciful, who made everything that He created, and He began the creation of man from dust. Then He made his progeny of extract, of worthless water [sperm]. Then He made him complete and breathed into him of His spirit, and gave you ears and eyes and hearts; little is it that you give thanks!”. (Surah 32:6)

Here we are told in both books that He breathed into his “progeny” of his spirit. Spirit is force multiplied by energy to produce motion. The spirit is the Spirit of God - divine essence, knowledge, wisdom and understanding that generates life in each subatomic particle of every electrical discharge generated by the action of electrical current in the brain.

The “extract of worthless water” sperm, underpins Darwin's theory of the evolution of man, but is not conclusive unless that sperm is guided by the intelligent unseen force, ultimately guiding that sperm to its destination.

The sperm does not have eyes, yet it has intelligence to guide itself to its destination. Each one of us goes through the same process before we come onto the planet, fighting our way through the vicissitudes of a dark canal to join with the egg to recreate the “genesis” story.

We are not independent creatures, having a life of our own making, 'made' in labs or just popping up out of the ground. With over 6 billion people on the earth today, each person was created in the tripple darkness of a 'woman's' womb, god's laboratory going through a process from clot to baby. That is not an accident or a by-product of evolutionary 'theory'.

An Omnipent Creator is the foundation of who we are. He shares His 'mind' in us so that we may submit to Him and become reflections of Him. The biggest difficulty is that there are very few “gods” or 'Human Beings' (the highest stage of mans development after spititual and animal) on the planet acting out the Will of Him who Created us in “His image and likeness”.

Any inaccuracies are mine.

Peace.
