The Purpose of Higher Education

An Interview with Leo Muhammad
The following Interview was conducted by Olusola O. Muhammad (OM) with Leo Muhammad (LM), the National Spokesperson of Minister Michael Muhammad of Muhammad Mosque 1B, London, when he delivered a lecture at the London School of Economics (LSE) on 11th February 2002.
(OM)
As-Salaam Alaikum Brother Leo Muhammad - How are you today?

(LM)
Wa Alaikum Salaam – I am fine by Allah’s grace

(OM)
I know you are giving a lecture today at the London School of Economics on the subject of higher education, and I just wanted to ask you a few questions and get your thoughts. What in your view is the purpose of education?
(LM)

According to the teachings of the Honourable Elijah Muhammad as taught to us by the Honourable Minister Louis Farrakhan, education is about drawing out the innate talents of the human being, that would allow us to rise ultimately into the ‘thinking’ of God and for us to become one with God and His Creation.

Education is paramount, for without education we become like the lower animals.  A God centred education that separates man from beast according to my understanding is paramount and something that every child and every human being should have access to if we are to become ultimately successful.

(OM)
Is it a crime to mis-educated people and why?
(LM)

Yes, its most definitely a crime to mis-educate human beings.  The reason why it is such a crime is because almighty God Allah in His creation of the universe has designed a universe that is perpetual and continuously moving towards greater perfection and equally the human being who is within that universal order is created in such a way that he or she is also moving towards ultimate perfection. Therefore, when one mis-educates human beings we are destroying the natural process set in place by Allah.

We are aborting a mission that was conceived in the mind of God before we were even thought of in the wombs of our mothers and so it is a crime to mis-educate people.  If you look at the world today many of the great achievements were made possible by the study of mathematics and those achievements could be taken onto even higher and greater levels if this world would acquire a proper knowledge of God. That would then really stimulate humanity to go onto greater levels and greater heights of achievements.

(OM)
How does a God-centred education benefit us?
(LM)

Brother, when we look at the universe and nature we will see that everything has a formula to it. Everything is mathematical in the manner in which creation comes into being. Therefore, when we understand that mathematics does not happen by accident and that plans, schemes or formulas do not just come about haphazardly we can then appreciate that there is a Creator. And then we can appreciate that we cannot do anything and ultimately accomplice our aims and desires without acknowledging that Creator, that force times power, that has given energy, birth and sustenance to every facet of humanity and its creation.

God should figure in everything that we do. This is knowledge on a rudimentary level never mind the higher scientific level of analysing the universe, life and everything within creation. Then we would see that in everything there is a chemical compound. Everything can be broken down in the world of science. We refer to water as H20. This chemical and mathematical formula tells you that behind the formula there is a Creator responsible for such complex chemical formulations, the majesty of which is water. So we as believers and people of faith most always in everything that we do acknowledge God.

(OM)
How do you relate a God centred education to a higher education?
(LM)
If we study language and how language is used, you will find that no language is really, accidental. All language has a root, based on mathematics. It is not an accident that we say ‘the most High God’ referring to Allah God as the supreme being. Supreme, being above everything. So, when we understand that in the context of higher education, that you cannot get any higher than God, you cannot get any higher than the Most High, The Most Supreme, then when we talk about higher education we know that the pinnacle of that is the knowledge of God and the knowledge of self.
(OM)
Could you point to a people who were mis-educated and what are your reasons for such a conclusion?
(LM)

The most mis-educated are indeed and in fact black people. When I say black people, I mean Africans abroad, forcefully removed from Africa over four hundred years ago into slavery and destroyed as a human reality. In that process we lost our name, language, culture, God and everything that goes to support and allow a human being to feel empowered and strengthened in our humanity, depriving us of the ability to achieve and accomplish the things that God placed within us, that are potential but not actual.

When we analyse what has happened to us as a people we will see that we are the most destroyed people on earth. Other people have suffered but no one has suffered the type of destruction that we have suffered in terms of the great losses that we have sustained.

(OM)
Would you say that education is a human right?
(LM)
Definitely, the Honourable Minister Louis Farrakhan teaches us that education is a human right.
(OM)
Regardless to race, class, creed or colour?
(LM)
Absolutely, regardless to any designations to where we are born or our status in life. Education is essential for human development. It is a need within the human being and every member of the human family has a right to education.
(OM)
What difficulties would a people who have been mis-educated experience and manifest?
(LM)

That leads to major disadvantages to those people who have not received a proper education and you will have those who have vested interests in depriving some facets of the society a proper education with a view to their exploitation in a slave like way, that they might give of themselves and not really receive the benefits.

Often times the one who deliberately sets out to mis-educate people or deprive people of education actually deprives themselves of a proper education because to abuse a fellow human being regardless of creed class or colour really means you are abusing yourself. It means that you do not understand who God is, therefore in the long term they will suffer. If you understand what is happening on a historically basis to black people at the hands primarily of Caucasians (white people), it’s not an accident that we are witnessing the deterioration of the educational and economic systems of this country.

Their social and environmental systems are also suffering. And so it is not a good idea to deprive one segment of the society of a proper God-centred education because ultimately, the law of cause and effect comes into play and the whole country will ultimately suffer.

(OM)
What is the highest form of education - knowledge taught by man in schools or Divine Revelation?
(LM)
It is knowledge taught by man because that is divine revelation. Divine revelation always comes through men and women.  Divine revelation is definitely the highest form of knowledge that comes from almighty God Allah through his prophets, messengers and through those persons that He inspires to speak to the people and state to the people ‘thus sayeth the Lord.’

Schoolteachers are inspired to teach and they really want to teach humanity and so all knowledge, wisdom and understanding, even common sense knowledge or divine revelation comes from on high. It’s all from God. I am thankful and grateful to Allah for the wisdom with which He has inspired me to acquire, and you know, there is so much more that we can learn.  Knowledge is infinite, so we should continually go in search of more and greater knowledge.

It was Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (PBBH) who said that a man that goes out in search of knowledge everyday is a wise man and the man that comes back and says I have found it has in fact lost it. We should embark on more and greater knowledge everyday of our lives.
