I was recently informed by a Brother with his ear-to-the-ground in the Black Community, that once, where East Ender’s and Coronation Street, produced by the BBC and ITV were guaranteed ‘Couch-Potato Syndrome’ successes, African Films and Soaps now screened on Ben (Black Entertainment Network) Television, Sky Satellite Network, have now become serious contenders for our leisure time television viewing.
What was surprising about the story was the audience watching the ‘African’ films. Some of the African films and soaps screened on Ben TV need screening for their content. Despite this, given the scarcity of Black Soaps and Films screened on the mainstream terrestrial stations, anything with Black actors is exemplary in the place of nothing, regardless to the production and country of origin of the film or Soap.
These Soaps and Films have given rise to the increasing audience viewing of African films and soaps shown on Ben TV among our Brothers and Sisters from the Caribbean.
Films and Soaps dramatise perspectives on life, however I have become increasingly dissatisfied with the typical violent, crazed-killing, psychopathic, mind-horrifying, women-killing, gun-toting and sex-crazed films produced by Hollywood and British movie and drama producers that depict European life.
There is a world of movies out there, which are the complete opposite and they are edifying, dramatically moving and captivating. It is interesting to note that, “over 52% of the European audience for African and Middle Eastern films is dedicated to Iranian movies.” |
